THE SUNDIAL

A sundial for a farmhouse in Kent

The brief was to design and make a sundial in place of an existing dial painted on the south-facing wall of a 14th century farmhouse in Kent. The style and scale of the existing dial was retained with the addition of elements that reflected current restoration project of a building that had been abandoned for over a decade.

The existing dial may have been an Arts and crafts period addition to the house, a time when the garden was re-worked and other features were added to the house’s interior. Ochre, soft black and terra cotta colours were used to depict the dial with its sun-burst face and corona gilded to give a rich sparkle.
